Thanks to California University of PA’s CUTV Newscenter for making and posting a video of a forum held March 22, 2016, for candidates in the 49th Legislative District.
Candidates for the 49th Pennsylvania House Legislative District in the upcoming April 26th primary election met for a non-partisan forum moderated by the LWV of Washington County on Tuesday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. at the California University Convocation Center—North Wing. The LWV worked with California University’s Melanie Blumberg and the American Democracy Project on this event.
Democratic candidates are Alan D. Benyak, Donn R. Henderson, Randy J. Barli, Anthony Garay, Robert Kepics and Mark Alterici, The Republican candidates are Donald (Bud) Cook and Melanie S. Patterson. Although all accepted the LWV’s initial invitation to participate, Melanie Patterson later said that she was not available to attend. This is an open race with no incumbent as current representative Pete Daley is retiring.
All forums run by the LWV are nonpartisan. Each participant was given equal time in an opening statement, responses to questions, and a closing statement. The goal was to focus on issues relevant to the office and district and to hear the candidates state their positions on these issues. The audience was encouraged to submit written questions for the moderator to ask.
In preparing for the election, voters can check the LWV Voters Guide for information about local races in Washington County. The guide will be available on line at washingtoncountypalwv.org for voters to check at their convenience and will be included in Washington County newspapers before the election.
